Do you consider yourself an active person?
Someone just starting out on their health journey might look at my social media posts and think, “I could never do that.” If you were to scroll through my social media feeds, you would see that I’m always out and about to keep active. The truth is, I haven’t always been this way.
After my daughter was born, I was far more sedentary than I should have been. Self-care just wasn’t a priority (note to any moms out there…it should have been). When my daughter started school, I finally started taking care of myself. I signed up for yoga class, and I made a goal to walk for 20 minutes twice a week. That was it.
Over the years, I have slowly added to my healthy habits. Now being active is just a part of our lifestyle. Family activities consist of walks, hikes, bike rides, or canoeing adventures; if we can walk or bike somewhere instead of driving, we do; my favourite past-time, if I have a few spare minutes, is to go for a walk; and dates with my husband consist of finding a fun mountain biking trail.
So if you’re just starting out, don’t feel that you need to do it all…choose something you love to do, set a small goal, and stick to it. Once you are in the habit of consistently moving your body, you’ll realize how good it feels. That’s when you become intrinsically motivated to keep going, and before long being active every day will just be a normal part of your life!!!
